Eastern Cape Townships will have an opportunity to change the outlook of their residential areas by participating in the Most Beautified, Cleanest and Enhanced Annual competition to be launched by MEC for Human Settlements, Ms Helen Sauls-August in Dutywa next week.
The department is challenging individuals, community organisations beneficiaries to showcase what they have done as a community to beautify, clean and enhance their residential areas. Therefore the call to action is for communities to start their own initiatives of beautifying, cleaning and enhancing their neighbourhoods.
The main challenges within communities are certain unhealthy lifestyles, choices and patterns of behaviour among residents. As the threat of climate change intensifies and weather patterns are affected, food security becomes a greater problem.
Government is encouraging communities to maintain a clean and green environment in numerous ways such as water harvesting, waste management and the planting of trees and vegetable gardens to improve air quality and sink carbon emissions in their neighbourhoods.
The competition will be launched with numerous activities such as waste collection, planting of trees, flowers and gardens to encourage sustainable human settlements.
This competition forms part of the department’s programme on the implementation of Project Enhancements and Community Integration.
