MEC Helen Sauls-August hands over homes, title deeds to families in Joe Gqabi, 15 to 16 Jul

In providing sustainable human settlements and promoting home ownership for the poor, the Eastern Cape MEC of Human Settlements, Helen Sauls-August, will handover a residential settlement in Steynsburg on 15 July 2015 and title deeds in Barkley East on 16 July 2015.

The settlement has 530 houses built through the Informal Settlements Upgrading Programme that seeks to build quality homes as per NHBRC standards, with access to economic opportunities and to social amenities for its residents. The beneficiaries include destitute families which are headed by the elderly, disabled and children. The Department has sought sponsorship for furniture and groceries for some of these destitute families to help alleviate their desperate situations.

The department will upgrade 20 Informal Settlements this financial year, with 4 785 quality homes built during this financial year from the programme.

As the department is prioritising the issuing of title deeds so that beneficiaries can legally own their properties, over 400 beneficiaries will receive their title deeds in Barkley East. This legal document will also prevent illegal sales of government subsidy, robbing people of their homes.
