Free State Acting Education MEC Elzabe Rockman will meet with bursary holders studying at various universities in Cape Town on Saturday, 19 September 2015 at Sport Science Institute of South Africa, 10h00.
The Free State Provincial Government Executive Committee and Heads of the Department (HODs) and Mayors will be visiting bursary holders to assess their academic progress and wellbeing.
The visit is in the best interest of students and also monitoring tool where senior most government officials check on how best can they give support to students beyond finances.
MEC Tate Makgoe and Head of the Department, Stanley Malope will visit University of Stellenbosch and Cape Town University.
“From 2009 till 2015 free State Provincial Government has awarded about 7 344 full-time bursaries to young people from disadvantaged households. Many of them have become the first in their families to access tertiary education” says Makgoe.
One of the 7 344 bursary holder, Kamohelo Derrick Malahleha studies MB CHB at the University of Cape Town and now in his third year.
“We use this opportunity to give government feedback and report of our progress both academically and socially to ensure that any challenges that might hinder our progress is addressed. Malahleha who is grateful for the financial and moral support says though the workload increases as he progress, sees no not to have completed his studies in 2018
For 2015/2016, the Provincial Government Bursary Scheme has set aside R450 million. The Free State Provincial Government has taken a step further to also financially assist post graduates students. In the 2015 academic year, 312 bursaries were allocated to students of which 134 are Masters Students, 136 are Honours students and 42 are PhD students while 630 bursaries were allocated for undergraduates.
