MEC Mohono hands over infrastructure and livestock worth R1.3 million to Bray Cooperative

The MEC responsible for Agriculture and Rural Development in the North West province, Desbo Mohono, will hand over water reticulation infrastructure, fencing and 100 goats valued at R1.3 million to Bray Cooperative on Friday, 14 February 2014.

Situated at Bray, Kagisano-Molopo Local Municipality, close to 200km west of Vryburg, the farm was purchased in 1998 through government’s Land Redistribution for Agricultural Development (LRAD) programme which was designed to assist previously disadvantaged citizens to access land specifically for agricultural purposes.

The size of the farm is 1 846 hectares, and it has 74 beneficiaries comprising 34 men, 16 women and 24 youth.

The provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has for the current financial year set aside a budget for this cooperative, and more than R1 million has already been spent for drilling, testing and equipping of a new borehole, purchasing of two diesel engines, construction of two engine rooms, two new reservoirs, five drinking troughs, and 12km pipeline.

“Our goals as the department is to improve livestock production in this area, and to generate sustainable income for these beneficiaries in order to uplift their living standard”, says MEC Mohono who maintains that the provision of goats to this cooperative will go a long way in ensuring that the goals set for this cooperative are achieved.

As part of the day’s activities, Primary Animal Health Care services will be rendered for livestock already on the farm, through the recently launched mobile clinics.

Members of the media are invited to the handing over of the project, which is scheduled to start at 10h00
