World Book Day Celebration 2018, Theme: “Reading Empowers”, #WorldBookDay
The National Library of South Africa (NLSA), through its outreach unit the Centre for the Book in collaboration with the Western Cape Library Service and City of Cape Town, will celebrate World Book Day on 23 April 2018 under the theme “Reading Empowers”. Minister of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) in the Western Cape, Ms Anroux Marais will lead the celebration.
World Book Day, an annual event celebrated on 23 April, is initiated by UNESCO to promote reading, publishing and copyright. The connection between 23 April and books was first made in 1923 by booksellers in Catalonia, Spain as a way of honouring author, Miguel de Cervantes, who died on that day.
The World Book Day 2018 celebration will be two-fold with the Door-to-Door Reading Campaign taking place in the morning and the Formal Programme in the afternoon. The Door-to-Door Reading Campaign is an outreach programme to raise awareness about reading and to promote easy access to books. During the Campaign books will be donated to schools, pre-schools, old age centres, identified homes and by-standers to facilitate access to books.
