MEC Alan Winde visits Pick ‘n Pay sponsored spaza shop project, 3 Apr

In December, Nyanga business owner Khosi Liwani was able to see a dream come to fruition, when she expanded her spaza shop into a fully-fledged supermarket.

The upgrade was part of a project by Pick ‘n Pay, working in partnership with the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, and a group of private and government backers, aimed at modernising township spaza shops.

The Ndwamba market is one of two stores in the Western Cape that have received a make-over, which includes upgrades to the fridges and IT systems, an expansion of the list of items they sell and business training for the owners.

Since it’s opening, the store has tripled the number of people it employs, from 7 to 21.

On Tuesday, April 3, Minister of Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde, together with top Pick ‘n Pay management, will conduct a site visit at the store and receive an update on the progress the business has made since re-opening. Members of the media are invited to attend. Photograph opportunities will be available.
