Western Cape MEC of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism Alan Winde to launch free Wi-Fi pilot project
Alan Winde, MEC of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, will outline the Western Cape Government’s plan to roll-out free Wi-Fi to key hubs in Delft, Atlantis and George.
Last year, the Western Cape Government issued the call for proposals to take free Wi-Fi to the province’s communities. This pilot project forms part of the Western Cape’s R1.3 billion plan to eventually connect all residents to broadband.
As the internet celebrates its 25th birthday today (12 March 2014), MEC Winde said broadband was a key tool in job creation. The World Bank estimates that every 10% increase in high-speed broadband penetration in developing countries results in a 1.3% increase in economic growth.
“South African has 20 million internet users and the Western Cape has one of the highest rates of internet access in the country. Through our plan, we are ensuring that this access is available for all. We want every resident to benefit from the economic possibilities of being connected,” said MEC Winde.
