MEC Alan Winde hosts Tourism Month briefing, 1 Sept

Minister Winde to host Tourism Month briefing; set to outline Western Cape's growth strategy for the sector

As part of his Tourism Month programme, Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, will table the Western Cape’s growth strategy for the province’s tourism sector over the next five years.

Minister Winde will outline Project Khulisa’s action plan for the sector. The objective is to add up to 100 000 jobs in the sector and increase its economic contribution up to R28 billion from R17 billion.

Minister Winde will host the briefing at one of the Western Cape’s exciting new attractions, the Zeitz Mocca Pavilion at the V&A Waterfront.

David Green, the Chief Executive Officer of the V&A Waterfront, will speak to updates on the V&A Waterfront's developments and its associated economic impact and job creation.

Project Khulisa’s action plan includes:

  •  New direct flights
  • A focus on selected niches, including cycling tourism and heritage and cultural tourism
  • Promotion of the Western Cape’s food and wine offering
  • Lobbying national government on visa regulations

The Western Cape Government’s Red Tape Reduction Team are also working hard to ensure that onerous regulations do not threaten the sector’s growth. The team recently intervened when a pair of German tourists’ came close to abandoning their holiday after their dream to tour South Africa by truck was scuppered by mechanical problems. The travellers and the Red Tape team will attend the briefing to provide insight on the Unit’s efforts to reduce red tape.

In addition, Minister Winde will outline his programme of action for the month.
