The Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom, will give an address and officially hand over the Mdavuza Senior Primary School in the Qumbu Educational District to the Qumbu community on Friday, 18 October 2013. This school forms part of the "One school per week" initiative, which began in July this year.
The Mdavuza Senior Primary School is one of the schools built through the Accelerated Schools Infrastructure Delivery Initiative (ASIDI), an extension of the broader Presidential Infrastructure Coordinating Commission. The objective of ASIDI is to address infrastructure backlogs in the country – in particular inappropriate, unsafe and mud schools.
The Mdavuza Senior Primary School was built at a cost just under R10 million. Over and above new classrooms, it features a multi-media centre, a library, a science laboratory and a computer laboratory.
