Looking into the past! Celebrating National Archives' Week

The MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture & Recreation, Mr D.A.M. Kgothule, is proud to
announce that the department will be hosting events and exhibitions in celebration of National Archives’ Week. The topic of the week is “Archives looking into the past”.

Wednesday, 22 May 2013

  • School visits – include a tour through the Repository, demonstrations on basic bookbinding and restoration as well as information on the Free State Provincial Archives – an outreach to Grade 10 to 12 learners of the Metsimaphodi Secondary School from Dewetsdorp, with a special interest in Social Sciences.
  • Exhibition – see below.
  • Guided tours that will run from 9h00 – 15h00.

Thursday and Friday, 23 – 24 May 2013

  • Genealogy for beginners – Basic Information Sessions aimed at getting the public more involved in using archives. School visits – include a tour through the Repository, demonstrations on basic bookbinding and restoration as well as information on the Free State Provincial Archives – on Friday the 24th an outreach to Grade 10 to 12 learners of the Ntemoseng Secondary School from Botshabelo.

This exhibition focuses on an interesting range of topics, amongst others:

  • The 100th celebration of the Land Act (1913 – 2013)
  • The well-known Women’s March in the early 1950s
  • The 100th celebration of the existence of the Union Buildings (1913 - 2013)
  • The 50th celebration of the Treason Trial (1963 – 2013)
  • The celebration of significant name changes in the Free State.

An interesting angle to this exhibition is the focus that is placed on the historic role of recreational activities in the Free State province, focusing on rugby, cricket, soccer, swimming and Sports Administrators. With National Archives’ Week, “Archives will be looking into the past” – don’t miss out on this one!
