Shova Kalula to bridge distance to schools
The Limpopo Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison will handover bicycles to the Department of Education.
The provision of Shova Kalula bicycles to rural schools is aimed at improving learner mobility and for learners to access school education. The bicycles will also be used as a mode of transport that will ease congestion and for learners travelling long distances to school.
In some rural areas, children travel long distances to schools; as a result, their school work suffers because of fatigue.
Identified schools will choose deserving learners to receive the bicycles. The bicycles will remain the property of the schools and the learners will use them as long as they are enrolled in the schools. Each recipient of the bicycle will also receive a helmet and a retro-reflective jacket for protection and visibility when cycling. The parents of the identified learners will have to sign a contract declaring to take good care of the bicycles while their children are utilising them.
The MEC for Education Mr Ishmael Kgetjepe and MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison Ms Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana invite all media houses to the official handover of these Shova Kalula bicycles.
The official handover will be held as follows:
