The provincial government will join South Africa and the rest of the world in celebrating International Day for Older Persons. The Premier and his entourage will as well celebrate this day themed Celebrating 20 years of Democracy- The future we want: What Older Persons are saying”.
The International Day for Older Persons in South Africa is celebrated to honour and recognise the major contributions made by the senior citizens. The elderly of this country have persevered lot of insurmountable barriers such as racial segregation and deprivation of decent education, jobs and services. Furthermore, they have made spectacular contribution in shaping the democratic dispensation of South Africa.

The International Day for Older Persons is not limited to appreciating their good deeds, but also to educate old people about their rights. The rights of the older persons are entrenched in the older persons’ charter and they are also protected by the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.
The objectives of international Day for Older Persons are to:
- Create awareness and educate communities and older persons about their rights
- To encourage communities in protecting older persons by reporting violation of their rights in any form
- Promote democracy by advocating the equality of older persons
- To remind care giver of their roles and responsibilities
- To celebrate twenty years of democracy
