The Member for Executive Council (MEC) Kgetjepe calls the community structures and individuals to participate on the promotion of reading in the province. This is a national reading campaign championed by the Basic Education Ministry. Minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshekga, who announced in the Education Budget Speech on 6 May 2015 that one of the key priorities of the department is to focus on reading promotion and provision of library and information services.
Getting the Nation to Read campaign gives effect to many reading promotion and library provision initiatives which include amongst others the refurbishment of at least 1 000 schools’ libraries per year, the implementation of reading programmes, the involvement of communities in promoting reading and provision of various models of libraries. This means there is a need to promote participation by community members.
Libraries are seen as a key lever in education achievements because they provide access to reading materials, space for reading and pursuance of literacy endeavours. Libraries are essential to the promotion of reading and almost critical to the improvement of literacy. “We are making a call for action from all different sectors of society to partner with us in making sure this campaign bare fruits.” MEC Kgetjepe said.
