Launch of Cooperative Clinical Learning and Intervention project

In an effort to reduce the rate of infant and maternal deaths in the province, the Gauteng Department of Health in collaboration with University of Johannesburg (UJ) will this morning launch the Cooperative clinical learning and intervention project at Doornfontein, Johannesburg.

This project which was implemented in August last year aims to enhance the quality of emergency care education, training, research and improved service delivery to the public.

The Gauteng Department of Health has loaned an emergency vehicle to the Emergency medical Care department at UJ. This vehicle “standard” ambulance will be dedicated for Maternity, Paediatric, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) services to be done by the university staff and students on behalf of the department.

This vehicle remains the property of the Gauteng Department of Health but will be manned by staff and students of the Gauteng Department of Health, the South African Military Health Services (SAMHS) and University of Johannesburg as part of this cooperative education project.

This ICU vehicle will also be equipped with state of the art paediatric and adult resuscitation equipment and will have highly skilled Advanced Life Support emergency care personnel. Where possible, an emergency medicine Registrar and or Paediatrician may also be part of the team. This vehicle will also perform ICU and high care paediatric transfers.

The ICU vehicle would also provide an additional ICU transfer service to principal patients and also be used to perform maternity and neonatal transfers of patients from one facility to another
