Department of Labour Contract Cleaning Sector nationwide public hearings to review minimum wage underway

The Department of Labour has started a high-level series of national public hearings on the Contract Cleaning sector. The purpose of the nationwide public hearings is to consult interested parties on the review of the minimum wage(s) for the sector.

The next hearings will be held simultaneously tomorrow (31 October) in three provinces in East London (Eastern Cape) at the Department of Labour provincial office boardroom at corner Oxford & Hill Street, Cape Town (Western Cape) at the Department’s provincial office’s boardroom at 9 Long Street in 4th floor, and in Witbank (Mpumalanga) at the Department’s provincial office at corner Hofmeyer & Beatty Street at C41 ground floor.

The rest of the Contract Cleaning Sector public hearings will also be held from 10:00am as follows:

  • Bloemfontein on 02 November 2018 – Laboria House Building 43 Charlotte Maxeke Street
  • Kimberley on 02 November 2018 – Department of Labour boardroom at Laboria House, Corner Compound & Pniel Streets
  • Durban on 05 November 2018 – at The CCMA Aqua Sky Towers, 4th floor, 275 Anton Lembede Street.

The public hearings will end on 06 November 2018 in Richards Bay (KwaZulu-Natal) at Department of Labour boardroom, 11 Lira Link.  The last hearing will start at 09:00am.

In terms of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, the current sectoral determination (SD) which governs the minimum wage and conditions of employment for the Contract Cleaning Sector, started on 01 January 2018 and ends on 30 November 2018.

The current sectoral determination prescribes a minimum wage rate per hour of R20,74 in Area A (metropolitan councils of City of Cape Town, Greater East Rand Metro, City of Johannesburg, Tshwane and Nelson Mandela).

The current minimum wage rate per hour of R20,00 is applicable in all areas of KwaZulu-Natal, and Area C which is the rest of South Africa the minimum wage rate is R18,90.
