KwaZulu-Natal Education equips Library Assistants, 9 Jul

The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal is going to hold a graduation ceremony for Library Assistants who have finished their qualification in the School Library Practice. The 106 Library Assistants who are beneficiaries of this programme completed their one-year qualification in February 2015. The Library Assistants Programme was initiated in 2013 in order to address the reading problem in schools.

It started as Reading Mentors Programme which invited volunteers from local communities to promote reading and build reading culture in schools. This initiative was strengthened and supported by the Education, Training and Development Practices Sector Education and Training Authority (ETDP SETA), who funded the programme by making available a stipend of R 1 700 a Month and a one –year qualification in school library practice. “We are very excited about this programme and we are confident that it is going to go a long way in ensuring the promotion of a culture of reading in our schools. It is also a way in which we as Government alleviate the plight of the unemployed among us,” said the Head of Department, Nkosinathi SP Sishi.

Members of the media are invited to attend this graduation.
