About the Jobs Fund:
This R9 billion government fund offers matched funding for innovative projects that can create new permanent jobs. The fund operates on challenge fund principles which mean that the funding allocations are transparent, open and competitive. Applicants include private, non-governmental and public organisations whose projects can create jobs in the areas of enterprise development, infrastructure, support for work seekers and institutional capacity building.
About this event
The Fund was launched by the Minister of Finance in June 2011 and has approved 54 projects to date. Chief Investment Officer of the Fund, Mr Dumisa Hlatshwayo will be providing an update on the Fund’s successful grantees and their projected performance.
The event will be at the offices of ‘Harambee’, which was launched by big business to help source, train and retain young people in entry-level jobs. With support from a R120 million grant from the Jobs Fund (matched with a further R120 million from Harambee itself), Harambee is aiming to secure 10,000 unemployed young people their first job by June 2014.
Research from the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) shows that that if a young person gets and keeps their first job, they are significantly more likely to remain employed for the rest of their lives. Harambee works with job seekers to significantly increase their likelihood of retention in sustained employment.
Frans Baleni, Brian Whittaker, Dumisa Hlatshwayo, Tamera Campbell and the team and beneficiaries from Harambee will be available for questions after the presentation.
