Independent Police Investigative Directorate appears before Police Portfolio Committee, 23 Apr

The Portfolio Committee will tomorrow hold public hearings with IPID (Independent Police Investigative Directorate) on their budget and annual performance plan for 2015/16.

The IPID plays an important role of ensuring that members of the SAPS and Municipal Police Service (MPS) act in line with the provisions of the Constitution and other relevant laws and prescriptions, says Chairperson of the Committee, Mr Francois Beukman.

The Committee will ascertain tomorrow whether the institution, which is headed by an acting head since the suspension of the Executive Director, Mr Robert McBride, is focusing on its core business, namely to do effective oversight and investigate corrupt police officers.

Mr Beukman says the Committee needs assurances from the IPID management that they are making progress with full implementation of the IPID Act as well as progress in the investigation of identified (alleged) priority crimes committed by members of the SAPS and the MPS.

The filling of key vacancies as well as the implementation of the IPID expansion strategy will also be under scrutiny.
