Human Settlements Minister Connie September will this evening (21 October 2013) take part in an annual prize giving and matric graduation ceremony at Spes Bona High School in Athlone.
The school, which mainly services the communities of Athlone and Gugulethu, will be turning 50 years next year and continues to produce a reasonable number of future leaders for our country. Last year, the school’s matric pass rate was 80% with 17 subject distinctions. As an indication of a good future ahead, in September this year, 86% of matrics passed their examinations.
As the Government and the Department of Human Settlements in particular it is our view that we need to encourage young people to be serious about education as they can help in solving some of our challenges. A large number of housing beneficiaries are people who have limited resources or income. This makes Government’s job more difficult as the demand often outstrips supply.
Government believes that if young people receive proper education, training and skills, this may increase their chances for decent job opportunities and security. More decent job opportunities can mean less dependence on state subsidies and grants. Ultimately, the Government would be able to deliver quality services to people who really need assistance.
