Human Settlements hosts community service delivery Imbizo in Soweto, 4 May

The Minister of Human Settlements, Mmamoloko Kubayi and Deputy Minister Pam Tshwete will on Thursday, the 4th of May 2023 convene an imbizo with community members of Soweto to deal with issues relating to human settlements.

The community imbizo, to be joined by Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements and Infrastructure Development Lebogang Maile, will focus on the service delivery concerns raised by the community leaders and representatives of Tladi camp and Meadowlands Badhuli/ Abahlali during a ministerial visit to Soweto a few months ago. This community engagement will be done jointly with the Gauteng Provincial Government and the City of Joburg, where issues pertaining to Human Settlements development are meant to take centre stage on the day.

The issues expected to be discussed include housing backlog and elderly people who have been on a waiting list since 1996, evictions from rental stock, poor workmanship, BNG houses that have been built but yet to be allocated to beneficiaries, houses for backyard dwellers, delivery of serviced sites for people to build for themselves and provision of basic services such as water and electricity as part of the upgrading of informal settlements.

The Department will also run a fully-fledged service fair where beneficiaries can check their application status.
