This year marks an important landmark in the protection and promotion of human rights in South Africa, as the South African Human Rights Commission celebrates 20 years of its existence, a year after the country commemorated two decades of democracy.
The South African Human Rights Commission invites members of the media to a human rights national conference to commemorate these very important milestones in South African history.
The national conference will be celebrated under the theme: “From 20 Years of Constitutional Democracy to 20 Years of Human Rights in South Africa” together with the launch of the 2014/15 Human Rights Advocacy report. The conference will be hosted on the 18th and the advocacy report will be launched on the 19th March 2015.
Press briefing will be hosted at 13:00 on the 18th March 2015 to announce the launch of the Commission’s 20 year commemoration and the launch of the Human Rights Advocacy Report that will be taking place the following day.
The conference will take place as follows:
- Venue: Radisson Blu Hotel, Corner Daisy Street and Rivonia Road in Sandton
- Time: 09h00 – 16h00 (18th March 2015 Day One). Gala Dinner starts at 18h00 – 22h00 (18th March 2015)
- Time: 09h00 – 13h00 (19th March 2015 Day Two)
The main objectives of the conference is to reflect on the role and experiences of some of our constitutional institutions in entrenching South Africa’s constitutional democracy over the past 20 years, to launch the Commission’s 20 year commemorative programme for 2015/16 and also to launch the Commissions 2014/15 Human Rights Advocacy Report.
SAHRC Chairperson Advocate Lawrence Mushwana together with representatives from other chapter 9 institutions including the Public Service Commission, Public Protector and the Finance and Fiscal Commission will be in attendance.
