Hosting of Farmers’ Carnival

The Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform has made great strides in its bid to ensure that the communal land that was unused are ploughed and their owners are able to contribute in the economic activities of Province.

The department will host a Farmers’ Carnival where the farmers will showcase their produce in a year that has seen the department planting a whopping 5 800 hectors of land with maize – benefiting a total of 390 projects, which is double the numbers of hectors planted in the last ploughing season.

In achieving this milestone, the department procured 52 tractors that were scattered across the length and breadth of the Province and at least 52 tractor drivers were employed as part the Extended Public works Programme while 10 young people are currently being trained as tractor mechanics in Fort Cox College of Agriculture and Forestry.

The MEC for Rural Development and Agrarian Reform Zoleka Capa, National Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry along with some cabinet members will lead a march which will start at King William’s Town’s Victoria Grounds Stadium and end at the Bhisho Show Grounds next to Bhisho Stadium.

During the march, a motorcade of vehicles filled with farmers produce that include but not limited to cabbages, maize, spinach and other vegetables. The carnival will also serve as engagement for the farming community as well rural development agents.
