In an effort to improve maternal health and reduce child mortality, Health Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi will launch MomConnect, a cellphone based application to register all pregnant women in the country with the aim of assisting them throughout the period of pregnancy and child birth.
During the launch of MomConnect, the Minister of Health will also launch South Africa's countdown to 2015 to assess progress towards meeting Millennium Development Goals (MDG's).
- Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
- Goal 5: Improve maternal health
- Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases.
Some of the features of MomConnect are:
- All registered pregnant women will receive SMS messages appropriate to their stage of pregnancy.
- The messages will advise them on what to do at any stage of their Pregnancy.
- The SMS messages encourage women to start ante-natal care at an early stage.
