Health launches national TB screening and testing during World TB Day, 24 Mar

Massive TB Screening to be launched during World TB Day

In a scale similar to HIV Testing and Counselling (HCT) the Deputy President together with  Minister of Health will launch a  large scale national TB screening and testing during World TB Day commemoration on 24 March 2015 at a mining town of Kanana in Orkney in the North West province.

The focus for this year’s commemoration are peri– mining communities, inmates at correctional services  and early Childhood Development Centres which according to reports are the most areas most affected by TB infection and prevalence.

The Department of Health in partnership with Global Fund has embarked on a long -term campaign to fight the TB epidemic in South Africa as envisaged in the department’s TB Strategy Plan 2011/16. 

Leading up to World TB commemorations, the department has been engaged in social mobilisation activities to get the communities to test for TB, HIV and AIDS and other non- communicable diseases.

The theme for this year is: “Ending South Africa’s TB epidemic: Accelerating our response in Key Populations”
