The Ministry of Health will launch the 15th South African Nursing Council tomorrow, 1 November 2013, following the end of term of the 14th SANC on 25 June 2013.
The National Health Act, 2003 (Act No. 61 of 2003), amended, provides for a transformed national health system for South Africa, and empowers the Minister of Health to put in place mechanisms and interventions in place to ensure that the Constitutional right of access to health for all is realised. The SANC, established in terms of the Nursing Act, 2005 (No. 33 of 2005), is one of the mechanisms to ensure the progressive realisation of this right.
Hence the Minister of Health recently appointed the 15th South African Nursing Council (SANC) in terms of Section 5(1) of the Nursing Act, 2005 (Act No. 33 of 2005), following the end of term of the 14th SANC on 25 June 2013, on the basis of nominations from interested parties, after publication of a notice in the Gazette, inviting nominations for suitable candidates. Subsequent to this appointment, it is necessary for the Ministry of Health to inaugurate this new council. The purpose of this inauguration is to recognise the incoming Council, outline expectations of the Council, as well as sensitise Council on the Ministry’s nursing initiatives, plans and priorities for the short and medium term.
