The Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation will hand over sport equipment and playing attire to 136 quintile 1, 2 & 3 schools, 21 special schools and 5 sport focus schools in the province.
The 136 schools were identified by Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation and Department of Education based on the following criteria:
- Quintile 1, 2 and 3 schools in the province
- Previously disadvantaged schools.
- Crime riddled areas.
- Proximity to one another to facilitate league running.
- Existence of school sport committee.
- Willing principal, willing school and willing school governing body (SGB).
- Schools that are currently actively participating in sport.
Schools in the province were supported with equipment and attire since 2006 as follows:
- 2006: 50 schools supported
- 2007: 40 schools supported
- 2008: 56 schools supported
- 2011: 323 schools supported
- 2012: 323 schools supported
- 2013: 136 schools to receive
Since the inception of this prograrmme, to date 928 schools benefited Sport Equipment and Playing attire from the department. The Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation will further support all 21 Special LSEN (Learners with Special Education Needs) schools in the province with sport equipment and playing attire.
These schools caters for learners that are physically disabled, Intellectually Impaired, deaf, blind, mild mentally handicapped and learners with behavioral disorder.The identified 5 sport focus schools will also clinch massive sport equipment and playing Attire provided by department.
The five identified Sport Focus schools in the province: Louie Botha Secondary School in Bloemfontein, Seotlong Secondary School in Qwa Qwa, Dr Reginald Cingo in Kroonstad, Harmony High School in Virginia and Olien Secondary School in Fauresmith are identified as Sport Focus Schools for the province to develop identified talented athletes and breed them as future champions for the province.
The athletes are developed holistically from support of sport equipment and attire as well as high performance training programmes. For the above, the department spent R 1 100 00 million for 136 schools, R 300 000 for 21 LSEN schools and 5 Sport Focus schools.
The total budget of R1 900 000 million was spent. The importance for provision of Sport equipment and playing attire to schools is to ensure that learners are presented with the opportunity to participate in school sport mass participation progrorammes and participation in School Sport Leagues.
The handover ceremony will be held at Norman Dubbell Hall in Heidedal on the 19th of September (Thursday) 2013 at 14h00 pm.
