Government celebrates Africa Public Service Day (APSD) with exhibition of best practices
Wednesday, 19 May 2013

The Department of Public Service and Administration will, host the Africa Public Service Day (APSD) celebrations at Refilwe Sportsground in Cullinan on Thursday, 20 June 2013.

The government, public servants, public service institutions, academia and citizens in South Africa will take part in the APSD 2013 celebrations.

APSD is an event entrenched in the African Union calendar which originates from the conference of African Ministers for Public or Civil Service held in Tangier, Morocco in 1994.

It was agreed at this conference that the 23 June should be celebrated annually as Africa Public Service Day.

It aims to discover innovations, reward excellence in the public sector, motivate public servants to further promote innovation, enhance professionalism in the public service, raise the image of public service, enhance trust in government, collect, document and share best practices for possible replication within a country as well as across the African Continent.

With the theme “African Public Service in the age of Open Government: Giving Voice to Citizens”, the 2013 APSD aims to:

  • provide a platform for local conversation around “Open Government” context;
  • dialogue and launching of the service delivery instruments, tools and network mechanisms to enhance accountability, promote transparency and the integrity through strengthened citizen participation in realising the notion of Open Government;
  • showcasing innovation, quality access of services, goods rendered and best practices through exhibitions of public services in advancing the notion of Open Government and in giving “real voices” to the citizens and active participation,
  • sharing and showcasing of the South African goods and services at the Continental Africa Public Service Day Exhibition alongside other member states.

Government departments will participate by showcasing their departmental services, products and best practices in ensuring quality access and empowerment of citizens. The Continental exhibitions will
be held in Accra, Ghana on 23 June 2013.

Guests at the celebration will include Tshwane Executive Mayor, Kgosientso Ramokgopa and senior government officials.
