On 17 – 18 February 2015, the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) will hold supplementary Public Hearings during which a number of entities that had appeared before the Commission during the first round of Hearings held in 2013/14, have been subpoenaed to re-appear and respond to questions put them previously with unsatisfactory outcomes for the work of the Commission. In terms of Section 12 of the CGE Act the Commission is empowered to hold both private and public sector institutions accountable for promoting and advancing gender transformation in the country.

The objective of these supplementary hearings is not merely to assess the level of compliance with the Employment Equity Act (EEA). It is also to assess the effectiveness and impact on women of the implementation of the EEA by these entities. The Commission seeks to use these public hearings to identify any systemic institutional, policy and practice related barriers to gender mainstreaming in the country, both in the public and private sectors and use the findings to inform policy makers on effective interventions.
