Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) in collaboration with O.R. District Municipality to host accountability engagement on GBVF in the Eastern Cape
On the 24th of November 2023, the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) in collaboration with O.R. Tambo District Municipality will be hosting a gender -based violence and femicide (GBVF) accountability engagement. The accountability engagement is against the backdrop of the spate of sexual assaults, rapes and other atrocities meted out against women including the elderly in the Eastern Cape.
As a consequence of the aforementioned, the Commission for Gender Equality and the O.R. District Municipality is convening a first of its kind accountability engagement wherein various stakeholders charged by the Constitution and various legislation have to take responsibility and act against the scourge of GBVF in the Eastern Cape.
Apart from the critical task of holding institutions accountable other objectives of the engagement are to:
- identify the systemic challenges, interventions, and solutions to the scourge of GBV&F particularly the killing of elderly women,
- address and create awareness on the sexual violations of vulnerable groups in our society,
- sensitize participants regarding the responsibilities, rights, handling and monitoring of violations against women and children,
- Identify available shelters for vulnerable groups including the elderly at areas where the scourge is prevalent.
