Gender Commission hosts Webinar on Gender Based Violence during Coronavirus Covid-19 Lockdown, 28 Aug

On the 28 August 2020 from 10h00 – 11h30, the Commission for Gender Equality will be hosting a webinar on gender -based violence (GBV) during Covid-19 Lockdown in South Africa.  The hosting of this webinar is informed by the CGE Act 39 of 1996, as amended, that says the Commission for Gender Equality will liaise with public and private sector institutions including civil society in advancing gender equality, utilise its research in making recommendations for the advancement of gender equality and lobby and influence parliament or any private and public sector institution on policy and laws of gender equality in South Africa.

During the period of the national lockdown caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, various public and private sector institutions, the media, experts and activists in the gender sector insisted that gender-based violence had increased as a result of the national lock-down. However, the gender sector lacks the necessary institutional capacity and resources to develop an effective system for collecting, storing and sharing accurate and reliable statistics on gender-based violence in order to guide effective national intervention strategies.

It is for this reason that the Commission for Gender Equality has invited a panel of experts to engage on how to improve the country’s institutional capacity to develop an effective system for collecting accurate, reliable and gender-disaggregated data on Gender -Based Violence. We believe that this debate will help generate insights and ideas to lead the country towards developing the necessary interventions towards resolving this institutional weakness and as part of supporting the vision of the National Strategic Plan (NSP) on Gender Based-Violence and Femicide (GBVF).

Panellists are:

  1. Mr. Risenga Maluleke – Statistician -General of Statistics South Africa.
  2. Ms Ester Maluleke - Chief Director, Governance and Transformation, Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities.
  3. Mr. Thulare Sekhukhune – Crime Registrar Component Head, South African Police Services.
  4. Reverend Bafana Khumalo- Co-Executive Director, Sonke Gender Justice.
  5. Ms Dibeela Mothupi – Commissioner, Commission for Gender Equality

Moderator

Ms. Tamara Mathebula – Chairperson, Commission for Gender Equality

The Gender Commission envisages that the discussion will assist the Commission and its stakeholders to engage the relevant policy makers in developing a national institutional capacity to collect, store and share accurate and reliable data/statistics to enable the country to deal effectively with the scourge of gender-based violence.
