Gauteng Treasury holds media workshop on public sector financial auditing process, 31 Aug

Media workshop on public sector audit outcomes

The Gauteng Provincial Treasury will hold a Media Workshop on the public sector financial auditing process next week Monday, 31 August 2015.

This two-hour session will be addressed by the Provincial Accountant General, Ms Ntina Themba and is aimed at preparing journalists to comprehensively cover the 2014/15 audit outcomes that will be released by the province at the beginning of September. Journalists will also be empowered with tools to analyse the Annual Reports of departments and public entities.

In addition, the workshop will discuss popular terms that are of interest to the media and provide practical examples on how to write about these including unauthorised, irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure, qualified, unqualified, clean and adverse audit opinion.

Furthermore, journalists will be provided with an easy to understand information on the strict criterion that is used to audit the public sector. This is a combination of international standards in financial management and auditing, and an additional set of measures on compliance with rules and regulations.

Public sector audits are important to enable oversight, accountability and governance. They ensure that government accounts publicly for its performance, financial and non-financial, and demonstrate that operations in the previous year contributed to the achievements of key service delivery imperatives.

Members of the media are invited as follows:

Date: 31 August 2015
Time: 10h00
Venue: Executive Boardroom, Imbumba House, 75 Fox Street, Johannesburg.
