With all the 5 regions having selected their squads, the focus now shifts to the provincial games this coming weekend to choose the team to represent Gauteng at the national games later this year.
According to the selectors only the best will make it into the team as the province seeks to end the domination of provinces like KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and Eastern Cape.
Teams will do battle in games including Intoga (stick fighting), Diketo, Dibeke and Morabaraba among others.
Says the team coordinator for the Gauteng team Bongile Ndlakuza “We have to impose ourselves and showcase that as Gauteng we are the most dynamic province made up of skills and talent from all the corners of South Africa. As such we are looking for the best talent to ever come out of Gauteng over the years to walk away with the title”.
“The games are also a means to preserve our heritage by investing this important value in the youth and thereby hope to draw them away from social ills such as drug and alcohol abuse, crime and more,” says Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Ms Molebatsi Bapape.
“We are amazed and happy at the increased participation in these games that serve to unite communities and uphold the authenticity of being South African. Aware of this, we commit to continue supporting this games that are essential for preserving our cultural practices and equally important for shaping shared values in communities,” concluded MEC Bopape.
