Gauteng Sport and Recreation activities, 2 to 4 Mar

As part of its mandate, the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation is creating an enabling environment for the thriving of sport, the arts, heritage etc even reaching out at the very members of our population. This helps bring various members of the society together as we seek to build a united and prosperous Gauteng.

The following are activities lined up until Sunday, 4 March 2018.

Event: Gauteng Regional Recreation Summits

In preparation for provincial Gauteng Recreation Summit taking place next week from 09-10 March, each of the 5 corridors of the Gauteng City Region will host regional summits. The objective of the summits is to provide a platform 300 delegates to deliberate on actual implementation of recreation programmes in communities of the province and their role and impact on society.

Johannesburg (Central)

Event: Provincial Primary School Athletics Championship

The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, together with the Gauteng Department of Education, will host athletics championships for primary school going athletes to build Team Gauteng to compete at the National Championships. The culmination of competitions at district level in track and field events, the provincial games will crown the Gauteng champions who will represent the province at national level.

Event: Future Champions U/17 Gauteng Cup

The U/17 Gauteng Cup is the prestigious provincial tournament of The Gauteng Future Champions programme, which follows the Gauteng Schools Cup. The provincial tournament encompasses top school teams, SAFA Gauteng regional teams and the Premier Division academy teams competing, where the top 4 teams will qualify for participation in the Gauteng Future Champions U/17 International Tournament. The Gauteng Cup tournament also includes  U17 girls’   teams competing in a simultaneous competition, with the top two teams qualifying for the Future Champions Gauteng Girls’ Final  played at the International Tournament.

Event: Provincial Aquatics Games

The Gauteng School Aquatics Championships will be held for the selection of Team Gauteng to compete on behalf of the province at the National Championships. The aquatic games serve as a platform for Primary and Secondary schools, districts and regions come together to compete against each other. In addition, talented swimmers will have the opportunity to be identified by the federations and potentially be awarded ministerial sport bursaries.

Event: Tuka 5-A-Side Diski Challenge

This is a 5-a-side recreational football programme that will run the first Sunday of every month for teams and individuals of the Bophelong location in the Vaal. 150 members of the community are expected to participate in the games, ages ranging from 16 to 35 years old.
