Gauteng Schools Games Programme to revitalise school leagues

The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation and the Department of Education are committed to reviving school leagues with the Gauteng Schools Games programme which kicks off in the province with the Regional Winter School Games taking place Friday 25 and Saturday 26 July in Tshwane, Sedibeng, Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni.

The Gauteng Schools Games is an initiative of provincial government which aims to develop school sports across various sporting codes by hosting and supporting leagues where players are able to develop the talents. School Sports are a key component to the future success of athletes as it is the breeding ground for future champions. The Gauteng School Games will provide school teams the opportunity to compete against each other and showcase their skills.

The Regional Winter games will see 15 winning schools from on-going school leagues across Gauteng regions compete for selection to represent their district at the Gauteng Provincial School Games in netball, football, volleyball and rugby. Teams from both Primary and Secondary schools will compete in various age groups ranging from 11 to 17 years.

The Gauteng Provincial School Games are set to take place on 15 to 16 August 2014.
