The Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) harnesses Women Emancipation through a sector Parliament for Women

Led by Speaker, Hon. Ntombi Mekgwe, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, will
hold the 2014 Women’s Parliament as follows:

Date: Friday, 22 August 2014
Venue: Faranani Multi-Purpose Centre, Tsakane in Ekurhuleni Region
Time: 10:00

During his State of the Nation Address, President Jacob Zuma stated that the Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women’s development would work with other Government Departments, agencies, the private sector and nongovernmental organisations to promote women’s socio-economic empowerment; development and human rights.

Twenty years since the advent of democracy, injustice and inequalities still exist which affect women. Women still need empowerment to harness their potential and emancipate themselves from mental slavery. The GPL attempts, in a number of platforms, to afford women an opportunity to address these challenges, and acknowledges the existing gap in the socio-economic empowerment of women, as well as the upholding of their human rights enshrined in the Constitution.

Women’s Parliament is one of the remarkable initiatives of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature that promote dialogue and conversations among women, in a still male-dominated world. It presents an opportunity for women across Gauteng to debate and come up with recommendations on how women can participate in the economy and governance of the Province. It also creates an understanding of how women can enhance social cohesion and also increase access to economic opportunities.

Present at Women’s Parliament to highlight existing initiatives for women empowerment, especially those heading households, will be Gauteng Premier, Hon. David Makhura and Chairperson for the Oversight Committee on the Office of the Premier and the Legislature (OCPOL), Hon. Hope Papo. They will share insights on how Gauteng women can take advantage of all the services available for them.

Furthermore, the session will be able to assist in unpacking resolutions taken by the House on the programmes set to assist Women. A programme to implement resolutions taken will be presented to the House by the Committee to ensure implementation by Gauteng Government Departments.

Kindly confirm your attendance.
