A pledge to commit the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in partnership with municipalities to heighten environmental awareness and community participation will be signed this Friday during the Bontle ke Botho (BkB) Clean and Green campaign awards ceremony.
“We need to encourage sound environmental practices so that the future generations are not left with the burden of correcting our mistakes,” says Agriculture and Rural Development MEC Lebogang Maile. The pledge seeks to remind all stakeholders to combat any threats to our environment.
“School participation in BkB is important in instilling responsible citizenship and pride in one’s environment at an early age,” Maile stressed.
Maile will present close to R4 million in prizes to deserving BkB projects for their commitment to sound environmental practices during the 2013/14 financial year.
BkB was established by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in 2002 to encourage sustainable environmental practices in communities at school, ward and municipal level. The five themes of BkB are water conservation, energy efficiency, waste management, sustainable agriculture and greening.
This year’s hosting metro is Ekurhuleni, the 2013 Greenest Metro in South Africa. Other participating municipalities which will also award prizes to deserving wards involved in BkB projects in their locality are Emfuleni, Joburg and Tshwane.
A press conference for the signing of the pledge will be held on the day.
