Gauteng Legislature provides feedback on Bua Le Sechaba Campaign, 28 Mar

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Social Development will convene a public meeting to provide feedback on its Bua le Sechaba campaign of 2013. The Bua Le Sechaba Campaign held in 2013 focused on the implementation of Youth Development Programmes in Tshwane Region.

The Bua le Sechaba Campaign Feedback Session is scheduled to take place as follows:

Date: Saturday, 28 March 2015
Time: 10h00
Venue: Hammanskraal Community Hall, Tshwane Region.

In November 2013, the Bua le Sechaba campaign was held to address challenges of youth poverty alleviation and shortage of relevant skills to contribute towards Gauteng’s economic growth. The Portfolio Committee was motivated to undertake the campaign due to the Gauteng Department of Social Development’s performance reports, which reflected challenges in reaching the youth to benefit from existing development programmes.

As part of the 2013 campaign, the Portfolio Committee embarked on a research exercise to solicit issues affecting youth development in the Region prior to the Public meeting with community members; after which recommendations were forwarded to the Department for implementation.

Through the research exercise and public meeting conducted, the 2013 Campaign assessed: progress in terms of youth development programmes; the awareness of youth development programmes; the perception of youth on these development programmes; and accessibility of organizations that provides youth development programmes.

Upon compilation of the findings, the Portfolio Committee forwarded resolutions were to the department in an effort to address youth development issues, which included: the targeting youth from historically disadvantaged backgrounds when embarking on awareness programmes; and partnering with other departments i.e. the department of education in an effort to deal with youth unemployment, among others.

Hosted by the Portfolio Committee on Saturday, the Feedback Session will provide an opportunity for the department to inform the community on progress made in addressing the challenges they had raised, as well as recommendations that emanated from the Bua Le Sechaba Campaign.

Among the participants, the Committee is inviting youth from areas in Tshwane Region; all Portfolio Committee Chairpersons; the Department of Social Development; Municipalities in the Region; as well as affected NPO’s.
