Multi-party women’s caucus leads march against gender-based violence
The Legislature’s Multi-party Women’s Caucus has partnered with the Ekurhuleni SAPS in a march to raise awareness about the seriousness of gender-based violence and encourage whistle blowing among community members.
Expected to attract about 6000 participants, the march will involve various sections of the Ekurhuleni community, including 16 Commander Clusters of SAPS across the region, community members and community organisations. It will also promote the use of services available to the community.
Up to this far, the year 2017 has seen the deaths of more than 22 South African women and girls at the hands of the men in their lives –be it partners, relatives or even neighbours. These are just the known deaths that made national news.
Closer to home, the Ekurhuleni East Cluster SAPS reported a catastrophic rise in violence against women and children; particularly over the long weekend of 22 – 24 September 2017, which included five rapes – among which was a child victim. Violence on women and children has certainly reached national crisis proportions.
