Gauteng Legislature launches Road Safety Campaign at Moloto Road, 30 Oct

October Transport Month Road Safety Campaign (I am a good driver)

The Gauteng Legislature Roads and Transport Portfolio Committee is embarking on a Road Safety Campaign focusing on promotion of good driver’s behaviour. To publicly launch the campaign, the Portfolio Committee will be at Moloto Road on Friday, 30th October 2015, targeting motorists to pledge.

In November and December, the Portfolio Committee will also visit the M1 Highway and Golden Highway. These roads were identified as key due to reports on them being among the deadliest roads in South Africa. The pledging initiative of the campaign will run from 27 October until 10 December 2015.

The purpose of the Campaign is to raise awareness on the importance of road safety and to encourage positive change in drivers’ behaviour as the Gauteng roads death toll remains at a high level and which is caused by among others, a lack of adherence to road signs, disobeying traffic rules; driving under the influence of alcohol and generally bad driver behaviour remains a problem.

The Committee seeks to achieve several outcomes with the campaign such as improved behavioural change by drivers, awareness of road signs and traffic rules. The other outcome is to emphasise the visibility and efficiency of all law enforcement agencies on our roads. Most importantly the Legislature from 27 October until 10 December invites all drivers in the province to pledge “I am a good driver”.

The Campaign was first rolled out internally at a House Sitting if the Legislature on Tuesday 27 October, where Members of the legislature took a lead by signing the pledge “ I am good driver” – committing to obeying traffic laws and exercise good behaviour at all times when driving on the roads.
