Gauteng Legislature’s Social Development Portfolio Committee hosts roundtable discussion on the review of services provided to persons with disabilities
Led by the Chairperson, Honourable Thuliswa Nkabinde, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s (GPL) Portfolio Committee on Social Development is tomorrow hosting a Roundtable Discussion on the review of services provided to persons with disabilities. The roundtable discussion is part of the Focused Intervention Study (FIS) the Committee has adopted.
The FIS is informed by deliberations of the Committee in the Annual Report for 2016/17 financial year. During this process, few areas of concerns were identified, which prompted the FIS on the Review of Services provided to Persons with Disabilities: A case on Community based services.
The Continuing lack of evidence based on reporting on the extent to which the services for persons with disabilities are accessible yield positive outcome and assist in promoting economic participation for those that can whilst living with a disability.
The Roundtable Discussion is scheduled to take place as follows:

The Committee is conducting the FIS guided by these objectives:
- To review the community based programmes geared towards promoting lives of Persons with Disabilities;
- To examine the accessibility of NPOs and the type of developmental programmes that are provided;
- To explore the awareness of the services available for Persons with Disabilities;
- To interact with relevant stakeholders to enhance working relationships as part of promoting an inclusive economy; and
- To identify intervention strategies to contribute towards improved services provided to persons with disabilities
The Gauteng Department of Social Development has been invited to report back on its interventions; as well as educate PWD stakeholders on services available to them. Stakeholders will also get an opportunity to share their challenges as well as make recommendations to authorities, all aimed at improving their quality of life.
