Gauteng Provincial Legislature hosts Annual Sector Parliament for senior citizens, 21 0ctober 2022

Themed “Assessing the plight of the elderly community in Gauteng” this year’s Sector Parliament for Senior Citizens hosted by the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL), will provide a platform for senior citizens of Gauteng to directly engage with both the GPL and the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) on various service delivery and social empowerment issues affecting them. The Sector Parliament further aims to empower Senior Citizens to have a say in matters of governance as stipulated in the Older Persons Act (Act 13 of 2006). 

It is also an opportunity to embrace the Senior Citizens’ role in all political, social, economic and cultural discourse of society.

Topics for debate during the Sector Parliament are:

  • Food security for older persons in the midst expensive cost of living as well as the health and the intake of medication for older persons. 
  • Gambling– the scourge of gambling amongst older persons. How prevalent is the problem? What regulations could be imposed by the economic development department to gambling agencies. Is it a quest to supplement their income or it is a question of inactivity leading to boredom. What is role of local government/ Cllrs in curbing illegal gambling. 
  • Infrastructure conducive for older persons? Are state buildings conducive for the use of older persons/ are older persons accommodated in conducive infrastructure in the respective public old age homes they occupy? Are the public sector service standards/ norms synchronized according to the Batho Pele principles?    

The Senior Citizens’ Parliament is scheduled to convene as follows:
