Gauteng Legislature commemorates Commonwealth Day, 13 Mar

Gauteng Provincial Legislature CPA branch commemorates Commonwealth Day

On the 12th of March 2018, Parliaments within the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) observe Commonwealth Day. The Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) has accepted the opportunity extended to CPA branches and will be commemorating Commonwealth Day on Tuesday, 13th March. Led by Honourable Speaker Ntombi Mekgwe and Honourable Deputy Speaker Uhuru Moiloa, the commemoration is themed “Towards a Common Future”; and aimed at raising awareness of the Commonwealth and the CPA amongst the youth.

In preparation for the commemoration, the GPL CPA Branch has visited schools adopted by Presiding Officers and initiated a discussion about the Commonwealth. The participating schools were briefed on the Parliamentary proceedings and; on Commonwealth and CPA activities.  The learners from these schools were given an opportunity to write essays on the theme “Towards a Common Future: role of the Commonwealth in today’s society”; and top five (5) essays will be selected for sharing with the audience during the Commonwealth Day commemoration. The commemoration campaign is focused mainly on: the role of Commonwealth and CPA in today’s society; participation of young people on parliamentary activities and Commonwealth initiatives; and Civic Education.

The GPL Commonwealth commemoration is scheduled as follows:
Date: Tuesday, 13 March 2018
Time: 13h30
Venue: Pace Secondary School, Jabulani, Soweto

The GPL intends on including the Commemoration as part of its annual programmes, ideally running the competition; encouraging the youth to participate more in parliamentary initiatives while collaborating with other key stakeholders.

Members of the Media are invited.
