Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Mxolisi Xayiya, will on Tuesday 1 April, launch the Memeza Women Empowerment Project and unveil the Memeza Community Alarm system to women and children in Gauteng.
The Memeza Personal Safety Alarm is a small key ring with a type of “panic button” that can be activated with ease when under attack.
Memeza’s Director, Thuli Mthethwa, developed the device and describes it as one of the simplest and most effective alarm systems which is operated by simply pulling on a lanyard. The alarm emits an oscillating alarm at 140 decibels.
The Innovation Hub has been assisting Memeza for two years with the development of the personal alarm system as well as a community alarm system. The Innovation Hub is a subsidiary of the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency, an agency of the Department of Economic Development.
The media will have an opportunity to meet the innovator, Thuli Mthethwa and learn more about Gauteng government’s support for innovations that are responsive to social needs and challenges.
