Young talent to shine at Provincial Gauteng School Winter Games
The Gauteng School Winter Games which kick off on this coming Friday in Florida in the Westrand are sure to produce top talent for the future of South African athletics.
Billed “the field dreams”, the games will serve as the start of a journey for many as the best of Gauteng’s young athletes go all out to compete.
The Netball and Rugby games will be held at Hoërskool Florida, while the Football and Volleyball action will be staged at the Florida Albion Sports Complex.
The games are a culmination of the school district leagues from where regional teams where selected. Winning teams will receive medals and the glory of being crowned Gauteng Champions.
“We are seeing a tremendous rise in the growth of School Sport in the province. With the programme regarded as a key breeding ground for talent identification, this will augur well for the future of sport in the country.
As Gauteng we want to continue being the leading entity in producing the best talent and having won the national title three times in a row proves that we are on the right track,” says MEC for The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Molebatsi Bopape.
From the provincial games, selected teams will go on to represent Gauteng in the National School Championships to be held in December 2015.
Meanwhile schools are soon to begin competing in other sporting codes including chess, basketball, gymnastics, table tennis, swimming, hockey and cricket to complete the Gauteng Team for the national championships.
