Gauteng hosts OR Tambo Soncini Social Cohesion Games in honour of OR Tambo, 28 to 29 Oct

Gauteng Provincial Government to honour OR Tambo through sport

The Gauteng Provincial Government in partnership with the City of Ekurhuleni and the Gauteng Sports Confederation will proudly be hosting the OR Tambo Soncini Social Cohesion Games from 28-29 October 2017 at Germiston Stadium, as a part of the centenary celebrations of liberation icon, OR Tambo.

Tambo was true hero of the nation who shaped South Africa’s vision, mission and value system. His impact left an enduring legacy which included forging international unity which these games hope to continue.

The games are made up 6 sporting codes: athletics, basketball, football, netball, rugby and swimming, and are a culmination of district and regional completions from which teams were selected to compete at the provincial games taking place. Top achievers from the games will be selected from a squad that will jet off to Italy, where they will take part in the Tri-Colour Games in July 2018.

Upwards of 1000 young people from all over Gauteng will be vying to be crowned the champions of these inaugural games of what is to be a grand annual affair.

Entrance for the games will be free of charge for sports fans to witness all the action for two days of the best of the province’s young sporting talent, talent which will take them to international levels.

“I am so very excited for these games to take place in Gauteng, the home of champions. These games will enable us to showcase sporting excellence and give our young future stars a platform to perform overseas,” says Gauteng HOD for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, said Ms Monica Newton during the launch of the games in Ekurhuleni today.

“Fundamentally, the aim of these games are to unite people and provide an opportunity for us to get together and showcase what we have” added Monica Newton, Head of Department of SACR.

“I would like to urge the people of Gauteng to come out in their numbers and enjoy the games” she concluded.

The games are an initiative of the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation
