Gauteng hosts official provincial funeral for struggle veteran Martha Mahlangu, 22 Mar

President Jacob Zuma has declared the funeral of the liberation struggle veteran and a mother of Solomon Mahlangu, Mme Martha Mahlangu, as a special provincial official funeral.

Mahlangu passed away at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria last Wednesday after a short illness.

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane has noted that Mahlangu was a freedom fighter in her own right.

"She experienced extreme humiliation at the hands of the apartheid regime and was harassed by the police and security agents throughout the long periods before and after the execution of her son.

"We are grateful for the contribution that Ma Mahlangu and her son have made to liberate this country and we will strive to achieve the ideals that they have fought for," said Mokonyane.

Mme Mahlangu is survived by her sons Steve and Lucas as well as her grandchildren.

Mahlangu will be laid to rest on Saturday at Mamelodi cemetery; a funeral service will be held at HM Pitje Stadium. A memorial service has been planned for Wednesday at Moretele Park in Pretoria. Subsequently a women's prayer will be held on Thursday at the Mahlangu residence.
