Gauteng hosts memorial service for fallen sport heroes, 30 Oct

With everyone still reeling from what has been the most devastating week for South African sports in recent history, the Gauteng Provincial government in partnership with the sporting fraternity have organised a joint memorial service to remember the three celebrated sportspersons that have died through different tragic occasions in less than a week.

The lives of accomplished 2009 World Champion in men’s 800m Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, Bafana Bafana Captain and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa and professional Welter Weight boxer Phindile Mwelase will be honored at the memorial service expected to be attended by Sport and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula, Gauteng Premier David Makhura; GP MEC for Sport Ms Molebatsi Bopape and senior members of the sporting fraternity among other guests.

Organising MEC Molebatsi Bopape has encouraged fans to attend the service to bid a final farewell to the trio who had given their lives to entertain and bring joy to South Africans. “It has been an emotionally draining week for us all to have lost our heroes in such a short space of time. Let us all ensure we give them a sending off fitting of the royalty that Meyiwa, Mulaudzi and Mwelase were worthy of,” said Bopape.

Details of the memorial service are as follows:
Venue: Standard Bank Arena, Johannesburg
Date: Thursday, 30 October 2014
Time: 12h00
