Gauteng honours Ben Skosana with Provincial Official Funeral, 23 Feb

Gauteng to honour late Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) stalwart, Ben Skosana, with a Provincial Official Funeral

The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) will commemorate the life and times of the late House Chairperson of the National Assembly, Ben Skosana, by giving him a provincial official funeral.

Sharpeville-born Skosana passed away on 12 February in Cape Town aged 66 years old. He will be laid to rest on Sunday 23 February at the Vanderbijlpark cemetery in the Emfuleni Municipality. Flags will fly at half-mast on the day.

"As a province, we are extremely saddened by the passing of this exceptional South African who has held various positions within our democratic government since 1994," Premier Nomvula Mokonyane said.

The late Skosana - a Member of Parliament since 1994 - was the Minister of Correctional Services from 1998. He was appointed Chairperson of the National Assembly in 2009 - a post he held until his passing. He was also the founder member of the Inkatha Freedom Party and represented the organisation at the CODESA negotiations that gave birth to the post-apartheid South Africa.

“We send our deepest condolences to his family at this dark hour,” Mokonyane said.
