Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG), in partnership with the cities of Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg and Mogale City, will this weekend 19 to 20 October 2013 celebrate the life of one of South Africa's struggle veterans; Albertina Sisulu with a series of activities.
These include an Albertina Sisulu memorial lecture, gala dinner and renaming the stretch of road from Ekurhuleni to Johannesburg up to Mogale City in Krugersdorp after the struggle icon.
This is the extension of the Albertina Sisulu Road (previously R24) that was launched in 2010 ahead of the Soccer World Cup, by the Gauteng Department of Transport. The R24 is a major East-West Regional route
This gesture by the provincial government serves to acknowledge and pay homage to a selfless servant of the people who dedicated a great deal of her life, fighting for equal rights to be enjoyed by all in South Africa.
"This is our small way of saying thank you to a woman who not only redefined the role of women in politics by leading from the front, but also placed others interests before her own. What better way to do this than to improve the lives of the poor through infrastructure development. "We have a huge responsibility as women who hold key leadership positions in the country to emulate Ma Sisulu's resilience and selflessness in all that we do," said Mokonyane.
These events coincide with Ma Sisulu's birthday weekend. She would have been 94 this year.
