Gauteng Health hosts HIV and AIDS candlelight memorial, 17 May

The Gauteng Department of Health will on Sunday 17 May 2015, host a candlelight memorial in remembrance of those who succumbed to AIDS at Sedibeng.

Under the theme: “Supporting the future”; the event will bring focus on the impact of HIV and AIDS and rally support for those living with the disease, especially the youth.

The Candlelight Memorial is an annual event held on the third Sunday in May. The event was sstarted in 1983 to mobilise communities to raise social consciousness about HIV and AIDS.

A recent study by the Higher Education & Training HIV/AIDS Programme (HEAIDS) was commissioned by NACOSA highlighted that sexual violence was one of the most concerning factors. More than one in 10 of the student Men having Sex with Men (MSM) reported having been forced to have sexual intercourse against their will, among other things.
